A golden langur was killed today after being electrocuted by an exposed electrical wire in Kuziapara, Bakhlagava in Assam's Bongaigaon district. This incident marks the fourth electrocution of golden langurs in the region this month, with three other langurs having met with the same fate due to exposed cables.
Locals believe the group of langurs had come from the nearby Kakoijana Reserve Forest in search of food. This tragic incident has raised concerns about the safety of wildlife in the region, as the endangered species remains at risk from electrocution due to poorly maintained electric wires.
It is important to note that a series of incidents in December 2024 has underscored the grave danger faced by Assam's endangered golden langurs. Within a single week, three of these rare primates were killed by electrocution in Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar districts. The uninsulated power lines in these areas continue to pose a significant threat to wildlife.
The first incident occurred on December 7 in Nayekgaon, Kokrajhar, when an infant golden langur was electrocuted while navigating through tree branches. Witnesses reported that the injured infant fell to the ground, where its distressed mother attempted to retrieve it.
Despite her efforts, the infant later succumbed to its injuries. Its carcass was found on December 10 by Dr. Joydeep Shil, a primatologist from the Primate Research Centre North East India.
In a subsequent incident on December 8, another golden langur was electrocuted in the Soulmari area of Bongaigaon. Just two days later, on December 10, a female golden langur suffered the same fate near the Sidalsati market in the Thakurani Khorapara area of the same district. This incident also left behind an orphaned infant, further heightening concerns for the survival of the vulnerable species
