Bongaigaon Refinery Donates 28,000 Mosquito Nets to Aid Kokrajhar's Fight Against Malaria Surge

In a noble venture, the Bongaigaon Refinery (BGR) of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (Indian Oil) donated 28,000 medicated mosquito nets to the Kokrajhar district administration to help combat the recent surge in malaria cases in the district. Kokrajhar district has witnessed surging of malaria since the past few months with over 2300 positive cases and nine deaths in November, prompting the BTC authority and district administration to take prompt action to combat the malaria.

The Assistant Manager (corporate Communications) Minakshi Konowar informed The Sentinel that the nets were officially handed over by N.K. Barua, Executive Director & Refinery Head of BGR to Masanda M. Pertin, District Commissioner of Kokrajhar. The handover ceremony took place at DC office, Kokrajhar on Friday. According to her, the initiative was part of Indian Oil’s ongoing commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its dedication to improving public health in communities where it operates.

The donation comes at a crucial time, as Kokrajhar district has witnessed a concerning increase in malaria cases, particularly in the Lungsung, Saralpara, and Ultapani areas. These areas have been identified as hotspots requiring immediate intervention to prevent further spread of the disease.

N.K. Barua, Executive Director & HR, Indian Oil said, “Indian Oil is deeply committed to the well being of the communities we serve. We recognize the serious threat that malaria poses, especially to vulnerable population. By supplying these medicated mosquito nets, we intend to help prevent and control this illness and enhance Kokrajhar residents' health..”

Kokrajhar DC Masanda M. Pertin, expressed her gratitude for Indian Oil’s timely support. “This generous donation of mosquito nets will be invaluable in our fight against malaria,” she stated. She said these nets will be distributed to those most in need in the affected areas, providing crucial protection against mosquito bites and helping to reduce the incidence of malaria. She also said the district administration will appreciate Bongaigaon Refinery’s partnership in addressing this important public health challenge.

Mosquito-borne diseases like malaria pose significant health risks, especially for children, pregnant women, and the elderly. The use of medicated mosquito nets is a highly effective preventive measure, creating a protective barrier against mosquito bites during sleep. Indian Oil’s contribution underscores its commitment to social responsibility and its dedication to working with local authorities to address critical health challenges.
